Intracerebral metastasis from prostate carcinoma is rare but should be considered. Early diagnosis of brain metastases in prostate cancer patients can improve management.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Neurology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Prostatic carcinoma is a common malignancy in men.
    • Intracerebral metastasis from prostate cancer is a rare but serious complication.

    Observation:

    • Autopsy records from 1959-1971 at Roswell Park Memorial Institute were reviewed for patients with prostatic carcinoma.
    • 91 patients with clinically diagnosed prostatic carcinoma were identified.
    • Intracerebral metastasis was found in 4.4% of these patients at autopsy.

    Findings:

    • Only one out of the four cases with intracerebral metastasis was diagnosed pre-mortem.
    • The clinical diagnosis of intracerebral metastasis from prostate carcinoma was often missed.

    Implications:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • The clinical diagnosis of intracerebral metastasis from prostate carcinoma deserves more frequent consideration.
    • Improved diagnostic strategies may enhance patient outcomes.
