    Summary

Nalidixic acid did not cause joint damage in adult animals. Immature animals sensitive to this antibiotic developed identical joint lesions that healed without lasting damage.

    Area of Science:

    • Pharmacology
    • Veterinary Medicine
    • Histopathology

    Context:

    • Nalidixic acid is an antibiotic.
    • Articular lesions can occur in animals.
    • Assessing drug-induced toxicity is crucial.

    Purpose:

    • To investigate the effects of nalidixic acid on animal joints.
    • To compare lesion development in adult versus immature animals.
    • To evaluate the reversibility of induced articular lesions.

    Summary:

    • Nalidixic acid administration did not induce articular lesions in adult animals.
    • Immature animals sensitive to nalidixic acid exhibited macroscopically and microscopically identical articular lesions.
    • These lesions demonstrated spontaneous regression, as the basal germinative layer remained unaffected.

    Impact:

    • Provides insights into the species-specific and age-dependent toxicity of nalidixic acid.
    • Highlights the importance of considering animal maturity in toxicological studies.
    • Suggests a favorable safety profile for nalidixic acid concerning joint health in adult animals.
