  • Psychology
  • Trauma Studies

Background:

  • Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a recognized psychiatric condition.
  • Motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) are a common cause of trauma exposure.

Observation:

  • PTSD after MVAs involves intrusive memories, avoidance, and hyperarousal.
  • Diagnostic criteria are outlined per DSM-IV and ICD-10.
  • Prevalence rates of PTSD post-MVA range from 1% to 9%.

Findings:

  • Review of etiological theories and risk factors for MVA-related PTSD.
  • Identification of other psychiatric and comorbid disorders following MVAs.
  • Cognitive-behavioural approaches are the most effective interventions for PTSD treatment.

Implications:

  • Understanding PTSD development after MVAs is crucial for early intervention.
  • Effective treatment strategies can mitigate long-term psychological impact.
  • Further research into risk factors can refine prevention efforts.
