A rare thoracic duct cyst was surgically removed from a 34-year-old man. Ligation of the cyst

Area of Science:

  • Thoracic surgery
  • Surgical pathology
  • Vascular anomalies

Background:

  • Mediastinal cysts are rare, necessitating accurate diagnosis and treatment.
  • Thoracic duct cysts are uncommon cystic lesions originating from the thoracic duct.

Observation:

  • A healthy 34-year-old man presented with a mediastinal cyst identified via imaging.
  • Surgical intervention was performed for the mediastinal cyst.

Findings:

  • The cyst was diagnosed as a thoracic duct cyst based on its location, contents, and immunohistologic staining for factor VIII-related antigen.
  • Pathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis of thoracic duct cyst.
  • This report adds to the 26 previously documented cases of thoracic duct cysts.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Ligation of the inferior pedicle of the thoracic duct cyst is crucial for preventing postoperative chylothorax.
  • Understanding the pathology and surgical management of thoracic duct cysts is important for thoracic surgeons.
