[Endoscopic treatment for urethral stricture and obstruction in pediatric patients. Report of three cases]
Insights
Endoscopic urethrotomy is a safe and effective treatment for pediatric urethral strictures. This minimally invasive procedure utilizes small caliber endoscopes for successful outcomes in young patients.
Area of Science:
- Urology
- Pediatric Surgery
Background:
- Endoscopic surgery is a common treatment for adult urethral strictures.
- Advances in endoscopic techniques now enable its application in pediatric patients.
Observation:
- Successful endoscopic urethrotomy was performed on three boys aged 6, 12, and 14.
- Conditions treated included inflammatory polyp, gonococcal urethritis, and complete urethral interruption post-pelvic injury.
Findings:
- Endoscopic urethrotomy proved to be a safe and effective procedure for pediatric urethral strictures.
- The use of a small caliber endoscope is recommended for pediatric cases.
Implications:
- This approach offers a minimally invasive option for treating urethral strictures in children.
- Further research may expand the use of endoscopic techniques in pediatric urology.
Abstract:
Endoscopic surgery has been performed widely for treatment of urethral strictures in adults. However, recent advances in endoscope techniques also allow us to practice endoscopic surgery in pediatric patients. We recently performed endoscopic urethrotomy successfully for the treatment of urethral strictures caused by inflammatory polyp and gonococcal urethritis in a 6-year-old and 12-year-old boy, respectively, and urethral complete interruption after pelvis injury in a 14-year-old boy. We recommend a small caliber endoscope for pediatric urethral strictures and obstructions for endoscopic urethrotomy, which is a safe and effective procedure.
