Summary

Neoplasms are the most frequent cause of sixth nerve palsies in children. Early neuroimaging is recommended for all children with sixth nerve palsies, even isolated cases, due to the significant risk of neoplasms.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Pediatrics

Background:

  • Sixth nerve palsy, or abducens nerve palsy, affects eye movement.
  • Identifying the etiology of sixth nerve palsy in children is crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the causes of sixth nerve palsies in a pediatric population.
  • To determine the most common etiologies and assess the significance of isolated palsies.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 75 children with sixth nerve palsies.
  • All patients had undergone modern neuroimaging.

Main Results:

  • Neoplasms or their surgical removal were the most common cause (45%).
  • Other causes included elevated intracranial pressure (15%), trauma (12%), congenital (11%), inflammatory (7%), miscellaneous (5%), and idiopathic (5%).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Isolated sixth nerve palsies were uncommon, occurring in 9% of cases.
  • Conclusions:

    • Neoplasms represent a significant cause of sixth nerve palsy in children.
    • Early neuroimaging is recommended for children with sixth nerve palsies, irrespective of whether the palsy is isolated, due to the high risk of underlying neoplasm.
