Summary

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is safe for patients with intraspinal bullets. This study found no adverse neurologic sequelae or bullet movement in patients undergoing MRI, even with complete spinal cord injury.

Background:

  • Intraspinal bullets pose a risk for neurologic complications.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a valuable diagnostic tool but raises safety concerns with metallic foreign bodies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and potential for neurologic sequelae in patients with intraspinal bullets or fragments undergoing MRI.
  • To determine if MRI causes adverse events or changes in neurologic status in this patient population.

Main Methods:

  • Nineteen patients with intraspinal bullets/fragments underwent 1.5 T MRI.
  • Multiple MRI sequences were utilized.
  • Patients were monitored for symptoms, and neurologic examinations were performed pre-MRI, post-MRI, and at discharge.

  • No patients reported pain or discomfort during the MRI procedure.
