Background:

Investigating personality differences within homosexual populations is crucial for understanding self-perception.
Previous research has often pathologized homosexuality, necessitating a re-evaluation of its conceptualization.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine personality variations among homosexual individuals based on self-ascribed gender-role types.
To determine the influence of gender-role orientation versus biological sex on personality characteristics.

Main Methods:

Utilized the Adjective Check List (ACL) and a custom questionnaire.
Analyzed data from 128 male and female homosexual participants.
Employed multiple discriminant analysis to identify significant personality differentiators.

Main Results:

All groups scored near the mean on most ACL scales, except abasement.
Ten ACL scales significantly differentiated between self-ascribed gender-role types.
Gender-role emerged as a more significant factor than biological sex in perceived personality.

Conclusions:

Homosexuality can be conceptualized as an alternative lifestyle rather than a psychological disorder.
Self-ascribed gender-role is a key determinant of personality characteristics in homosexual individuals.
Findings challenge traditional views linking personality solely to biological sex.
