    Summary

Pseudomyxoma peritonei, often originating from benign ovarian or appendix tumors, requires surgical removal of mucus and tumors. Local chemotherapy and intra-abdominal gold-198 (Au) showed some benefit in managing this rare condition.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Gastroenterology
    • Gynecologic Oncology

    Background:

    • Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a rare condition characterized by mucinous ascites.
    • It can arise from appendiceal mucinous neoplasms or ovarian mucinous tumors.

    Observation:

    • This study presents the clinical course of 11 patients (8 ovarian, 3 appendiceal).
    • Most tumors were initially benign, with one case showing inguinal lymph node metastasis.

    Findings:

    • Surgical resection of tumors and mucin was the primary treatment.
    • Intra-abdominal chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil provided some benefit.
    • One patient with peritoneal papillomatosis experienced complete remission after intra-abdominal radioactive gold (Au-198) instillation.

    Implications:

    • Aggressive surgical management combined with adjuvant therapies can be effective for pseudomyxoma peritonei.
    • Radioactive gold instillation may be a viable option for managing peritoneal disease.
    • Further research into optimal treatment strategies for pseudomyxoma peritonei is warranted.
