Area of Science:

  • Pathology
  • Dermatology
  • Surgical Innovation

Background:

  • Dystrophic calcification, characterized by abnormal calcium deposits in injured or necrotic tissue, is a recognized pathological process.
  • While common in various contexts, severe bilateral gluteal calcification secondary to repeated injections is infrequently documented.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with extensive bilateral gluteal calcification, manifesting as multiple subcutaneous lumps and a chronic, unhealed fistula.
  • The calcification was attributed to numerous intramuscular and/or subcutaneous injections administered over time.

Findings:

  • The severe gluteal calcification and associated fistula were effectively managed using carbon dioxide laser treatment.
  • No recurrence of the condition was observed post-treatment, indicating the efficacy of the intervention.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a rare but severe complication of repeated injections, emphasizing the importance of injection site management.
  • Carbon dioxide laser therapy presents a viable and potentially curative option for extensive dystrophic calcification in soft tissues.
  • Further research into the pathogenesis and optimal treatment strategies for injection-induced dystrophic calcification is warranted.
