Fat embolism in kwashiorkor.

    Summary

    Fat embolism occurred in an infant with kwashiorkor due to a fatty liver. This rare complication, involving fat globules in the bloodstream and lungs, was not observed in other severe kwashiorkor cases.

    Background:

    • Kwashiorkor is a severe form of malnutrition characterized by edema, skin changes, and fatty liver.
    • Fat embolism is a serious condition where fat globules obstruct blood vessels.

    Observation:

    • A case of fat embolism is described in an infant diagnosed with kwashiorkor and a significantly fatty liver.
    • Fat globules were identified during necropsy in the infant's hepatic veins, heart chambers, pulmonary artery, and lung vasculature.

    Findings:

    • The infant's fatty liver was the presumed source of the fat embolism.
    • Despite severe kwashiorkor, similar fat embolism was not detected in lung tissues from 40 other deceased patients.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights a rare but potentially fatal complication of severe fatty liver in kwashiorkor.
    • Further research may be needed to understand the specific mechanisms and prevalence of fat embolism in pediatric malnutrition.
