Summary

Certain microscopic brain features, like neuron clustering and white matter abnormalities, are more common in epilepsy patients. Increased white matter neurons correlate with poorer surgical outcomes for temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the frequency of specific microscopic brain features in TLE patients versus controls.
  • To determine if these features are associated with epilepsy or normal variation.
  • To assess the correlation between microscopic findings and postoperative outcomes in TLE.

Main Methods:

  • Histopathologic analysis of temporal lobe tissue from 47 surgically treated TLE patients.
  • Comparison with 29 normal autopsy control brain tissues.
