Insights
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is safe and effective for treating pediatric gallstones. This minimally invasive approach offers a short and successful recovery for children.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric surgery
- Gastrointestinal surgery
- Minimally invasive procedures
Context:
- Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the standard treatment for gallstones in adults.
- Recent studies explore its application in pediatric patients.
- Gallbladder lithiasic disease in children is increasingly recognized.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the utility and outcomes of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in pediatric patients.
- To report on the safety and efficacy of a modified laparoscopic technique for children.
- To assess the feasibility of minimally invasive gallbladder removal in pediatric gallstone disease.
Summary:
- Six children aged 10-15 with gallbladder lithiasic disease underwent a modified laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
- The procedure was performed without complications, with an average surgical time of 90 minutes.
- Patients experienced a short and successful recovery period.
Impact:
- Demonstrates the safety and effectiveness of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in pediatric populations.
- Supports the adoption of minimally invasive techniques for gallstone treatment in children.
- Provides evidence for improved patient outcomes and recovery in pediatric gallbladder surgery.
Background:
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the standard current treatment in adults with cholelithiasis, the experience in children has been reported recently.
Objective:
To report the utility and results with this new technology in the pediatric age.
Methods:
We found six children, 10 to 15 years old, with gallbladder lithiasic disease, all were operated with a modified laparoscopic cholecystectomy technique.
Results:
The operation was performed without complications, the average surgical time was 90 minutes, and the recover, was short and successful.
Conclusions:
Laparoscopic cholecystectomy in children can be safe and effective.
