Summary

The simple noisy linear amplifier model for perceptual noise is inaccurate. A more complex model with nonlinearities better explains visual detection and identification data across different noise levels.

Area of Science:

  • Visual perception
  • Psychophysics
  • Computational neuroscience

Background:

  • The method of equivalent internal noise quantifies perceptual inefficiencies.
  • A simple noisy linear amplifier model is commonly used to estimate internal noise (Ninternal).
  • This model predicts a specific relationship between thresholds and external noise (Next).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To test the internal consistency of the simple noisy linear amplifier model.
  • To investigate threshold ratios across different performance levels and external noise contrasts.
  • To compare the simple model with an elaborated perceptual template model.

Main Methods:

  • Estimated threshold ratios for Gabor orientation identification and detection tasks.
  • Varied external noise contrasts and multiple performance levels (d').

Related Experiment Videos

  • Fitted data using both the simple noisy linear amplifier and an elaborated perceptual template model.
  • Main Results:

    • Observed threshold ratios significantly departed from the predictions of the simple noisy linear amplifier model.
    • The elaborated perceptual template model, including nonlinearities and multiplicative noise, provided a better fit to the data.
    • This suggests limitations in previous studies relying on the simpler model.

    Conclusions:

    • The simple noisy linear amplifier model is insufficient for accurately describing perceptual noise.
    • An elaborated perceptual template model offers a more comprehensive explanation of visual task performance.
    • Reinterpretation of prior research using the simpler model may be necessary.
