  • To assess the influence of parental quitting on adolescent smoking uptake and cessation.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of a cross-sectional sample of 4,502 adolescents (ages 15-17) from the 1992-1993 Tobacco Supplement of the Current Population Survey.

  • Adolescents with parents who quit smoking were 33% less likely to be ever smokers.
  • Adolescent ever smokers with parents who quit were twice as likely to quit smoking.
  • Parental quitting before age nine was most effective in reducing adolescent smoking initiation.

Conclusions:

  • Encouraging parental smoking cessation can effectively reduce adolescent smoking uptake and increase cessation.
  • Early parental quitting provides the greatest protective effect against adolescent smoking.
