Summary

Human aging does not significantly alter serum leptin levels in men or women. While women generally have higher leptin, this difference is not linked to aging but possibly better nutritional status.

Background:

  • Leptin is a novel hormone crucial for regulating energy balance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if human aging modifies serum leptin levels.
  • To examine gender differences in leptin concentrations across age groups.

Main Methods:

  • Studied 268 Caucasian men and women aged 22-85 years.
  • Divided participants into age groups (30, 40, 50, 65, 75, 80, 85 years).
  • Measured fasting serum leptin concentrations using radioimmunoassay.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in leptin levels across age groups for females (p = 0.090).
  • Males aged 30 had lower leptin than males aged 75 (p = 0.042).
  • Females consistently showed 2-3 fold higher leptin than males (p < 0.005).
  • Longer-living elderly women had higher leptin and BMI, but differences disappeared after BMI adjustment.

Conclusions:

  • Aging does not appear to affect serum leptin levels in either sex.
  • Gender differences in leptin persist into older age groups.
  • Higher leptin in longer-living women may indicate better nutritional status and adipose tissue mass, not a survival factor.
