Insights
Coil embolization successfully blocked blood flow to a rare cardiac metastasis from uterine cancer. This interventional radiology technique may offer palliative care for patients with malignant heart tumors.
Area of Science:
- Interventional Radiology
- Cardiology
- Oncology
Background:
- Cardiac metastases are rare but associated with poor prognosis.
- Uterine leiomyosarcoma can rarely metastasize to the heart.
- Palliative treatment options for cardiac metastases are limited.
Observation:
- A patient with a cardiac metastasis from uterine leiomyosarcoma was identified.
- Tumor-related coronary arteries supplying the metastasis were targeted.
Findings:
- Coil embolization of the tumor-feeding coronary arteries was technically successful.
- This procedure effectively interrupted the coronary blood supply to the cardiac metastasis.
Implications:
- Percutaneous coronary embolization may be a viable palliative therapeutic strategy for cardiac metastases from highly malignant tumors.
- This approach could improve quality of life for select patients by managing tumor burden in the heart.
- Further research is warranted to establish the safety and efficacy of this technique in a larger cohort.
Abstract:
Coil embolization of tumor-related coronary arteries was successful in interrupting coronary supply to a cardiac metastasis from uterine leiomyosarcoma. In patients with cardiac metastases of highly malignant tumors this may be a palliative therapeutic approach.
