Background:

Schizophrenia in the elderly is often under-recognized and undertreated.
Early intervention strategies are primarily focused on younger populations.

Observation:

Six elderly patients diagnosed with DSM-IV schizophrenia were studied.
All patients were single, socially isolated, and required involuntary admission.

Findings:

Intensive treatment including depot antipsychotics, psychosocial interventions, and community treatment orders resulted in positive outcomes for all patients.
Assertive management proved effective in this elderly cohort.

Implications:

Therapeutic optimism and assertive treatment approaches should be extended to elderly schizophrenia patients.
