Background:

  • A 67-year-old male patient with a history of three spinal cord schwannoma surgeries presented with low back pain.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) incidentally discovered a 6 x 5 cm tumor in the right infrarenal retroperitoneum.

Observation:

  • The retroperitoneal tumor was compressing the patient's right kidney.
  • The patient was referred to the urology department for surgical excision of the suspected retroperitoneal tumor.

Findings:

  • Histological examination confirmed the retroperitoneal mass to be a schwannoma.
  • The tumor was diagnosed as a heterotopic recurrent schwannoma, a rare occurrence.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the importance of considering unusual presentations of schwannoma recurrence.
  • It highlights the multidisciplinary approach involving neurosurgery and urology in managing complex retroperitoneal tumors.
  • Further research into the mechanisms of heterotopic schwannoma recurrence may improve patient outcomes.
