[The orthographic quotient. Quantitative study of the free text for dyslectics]

The orthographic quotient (O.Q.) is the rate per cent of correctly spelled words in spontaneous writing of dyslexic children. O.Q. was studied in 31 children. It was found a constant O.Q. in each child and a positive correlation with the reading level (p less than 0.001). O.Q. may be regarded as a new quantitative characteristic of dyslexiadysorthography. Contrary to other tests, O.Q. does not require any standardized material and may be repeated ad libitum. It might be applied to: 1. the diagnosis of dyslexia and the assessment of progress during remedial teching; 2. the early detection of dyslexia in primary schools.
