    Summary

    The macrophage electrophoretic mobility (MEM) test shows a strong association between cancer and a positive response. However, the test is not yet reliable for early cancer diagnosis due to positive results in non-malignant conditions.

    Background:

    • The macrophage electrophoretic mobility (MEM) test assesses lymphocyte response to specific antigens.
    • Myelin basic protein (MBP) is a component of the central nervous system, and its role in immune responses in various diseases is of interest.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the utility of the MEM test in detecting lymphocyte sensitization to myelin basic protein in patients with malignant and non-malignant conditions.
    • To evaluate the reliability of the MEM test for early cancer diagnosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Lymphocyte response to myelin basic protein was measured using the macrophage electrophoretic mobility (MEM) test.
    • A total of 161 subjects were included: normal controls, patients with malignant conditions, and patients with non-malignant diseases.
    • Specific analysis was conducted on 46 patients with breast lumps before surgical intervention.

    Main Results:

    • A high level of association was observed between clinically evident cancer and a positive MEM test response.
    • Positive MEM test responses were also frequent in patients with non-malignant inflammatory and ischaemic diseases (24/25).
    • In breast lump patients, the test was positive in 15/19 malignant cases and 5/27 benign cases.

    Conclusions:

    • The MEM test, in its current form, is not sufficiently reliable for the diagnosis of early cancer.
    • Tissue necrosis in both malignant and non-malignant conditions may contribute to sensitization to myelin basic protein.
    • The MEM test may offer insights into immune recall mechanisms not easily detected by other methods.
