Summary

Cadmium (Cd) exposure may promote peripheral polyneuropathy (PNP) in older workers. Higher cadmium body burden correlated with increased PNP risk, suggesting environmental factors contribute to this neurological condition.

Background:

  • Idiopathic polyneuropathy (PNP) remains undiagnosed in up to 24% of cases.
  • Cadmium (Cd), an environmental and occupational hazard, is a known neurotoxicant with a long human half-life.
  • Older workers may be more vulnerable to chronic Cd exposure and subsequent peripheral nervous system damage.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between long-term cadmium exposure and the development of peripheral polyneuropathy (PNP) in retired workers.
  • To assess if increased cadmium body burden is a risk factor for PNP in an aging population.

Main Methods:

  • A blinded epidemiological survey comparing 13 retired Cd-exposed workers and 19 age-matched controls.
  • Neurological examination, nerve conduction studies, needle EMG, and standardized questionnaires.
