Recovery from unilateral visuo-spatial neglect?

D C Campbell, J M Oxbury

Cortex; a Journal Devoted to the Study of the Nervous System and Behavior
    |December 1, 1976
    PubMed
    Summary

Patients with unilateral visuo-spatial neglect after stroke showed improvement but still had deficits in spatial analysis and visual perception. Their persistent abnormal position preference highlights ongoing challenges in visuo-spatial processing.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Neurology
    • Cognitive Psychology

    Background:

    • Unilateral visuo-spatial neglect is a common deficit following right hemisphere stroke.
    • The long-term recovery trajectory and specific persistent impairments require further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To reassess patients with unilateral visuo-spatial neglect after stroke.
    • To compare their persistent deficits with stroke patients without neglect.
    • To evaluate the stability of abnormal position preference.

    Main Methods:

    • Longitudinal assessment of patients with right hemisphere stroke.
    • Utilized drawing, copying, spatial analysis, and visual perception tasks.
    • Included a control group of right hemisphere stroke patients without neglect.

    Main Results:

    • Marked reduction in neglect incidence over five months.
    • Persistent impairments in spatial analysis and visual perception in the neglect group.
    • Abnormal position preference remained stable in the neglect group.

    Conclusions:

    • Visuo-spatial neglect shows some recovery but underlying deficits can persist.
    • Spatial analysis and visual perception are particularly vulnerable long-term.
    • Abnormal position preference may indicate stable spatial processing alterations.
