The many reasons why hospitals buy technology

Hospitals spent almost $9 billion on capital equipment in 1989. Many factors enter in the decisionmaking on technology acquisition, some having more to do with hospital politics or competitive demands than with a facility's true clinical requirements. But administrators are learning lessons from past acquisition mistakes and are placing more of the burden on vendors and physicians to prove that new technology is a prudent purchase.
