Teaming up to improve quality of patient care

A philosophy of care that involves family members or friends in patients' medical treatment is beginning to catch on at hospitals. Advocates say cooperative care increases quality and reduces costs because family members perform myriad tasks. Patients are involved in decisions about their own treatment and even have access to their medical records. But some question whether patients are ready to take on that much control.
