Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Administration
  • Medical Imaging Operations
  • Healthcare Management

Background:

  • Long report turnaround times in diagnostic imaging departments can impact patient care and operational efficiency.
  • Traditional transcription processes may lead to delays and increased costs.
  • Rhode Island Hospital's diagnostic imaging department faced a five-day report turnaround time in 1989.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the feasibility and impact of transcription incentive programs in a diagnostic imaging setting.
  • To develop and implement a model for improving transcription efficiency and report turnaround.
  • To evaluate the effects of the implemented program on productivity, costs, and staff motivation.

Main Methods:

  • Research and investigation into transcription incentive programs.
  • Development of a tailored incentive program model.
  • Implementation of the model within the diagnostic imaging department.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of key performance indicators over 15 months.

Main Results:

  • Significant increase in staff productivity.
  • Reduction in operational costs.
  • Enhanced staff motivation and engagement.
  • Substantial decrease in diagnostic imaging report turnaround time.

Conclusions:

  • Transcription incentive programs are effective in improving efficiency within diagnostic imaging departments.
  • The implemented model led to measurable improvements in productivity, cost-effectiveness, and report timeliness.
  • Motivated staff contribute to better overall departmental performance and patient care outcomes.
