HCFA mortality data: a tool for quality improvement efforts

Health Care Finance Administration mortality data, which are obviously useful information, deserve close scrutiny. Many factors attributable to patient outcome are not considered when analyzing these data (e.g., health prior to hospital admission). These data should not be used alone, but as a tool to guide quality improvement efforts.
