    Area of Science:

    • Geriatric Care
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Limited availability of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) beds in healthcare facilities outside major urban centers.
    • Operator concerns regarding the stigma associated with AIDS, leading to potential loss of staff and geriatric residents.
    • Increasing prevalence of the AIDS epidemic necessitates greater capacity for patient admission.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To explore the challenges and rewards associated with admitting patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) into healthcare facilities.
    • To understand the social and medical needs of individuals living with AIDS.
    • To assess caregiver satisfaction in providing care to this patient population.

    Main Methods:

    • Qualitative analysis of caregiver experiences and facility policies.
    • Review of epidemiological data on the AIDS epidemic.
    • Exploration of social and medical support systems for AIDS patients.

    Main Results:

    • Healthcare facilities face significant barriers to admitting AIDS patients, primarily due to stigma and operational concerns.
    • Caregivers who have adapted to the specific needs of AIDS patients report high levels of job satisfaction.
    • The worsening epidemic is expected to increase demand for specialized AIDS care.

    Conclusions:

    • Addressing the stigma associated with AIDS is crucial for increasing bed availability.
    • Healthcare providers can find fulfillment in meeting the unique needs of individuals with AIDS.
    • Proactive adaptation of facilities and staff training are necessary to accommodate the growing AIDS epidemic.
