Background:

  • Surgical treatment of deep-seated brain tumors is challenging due to accessibility and control issues.
  • Previous hyperthermia methods faced limitations with equipment and temperature regulation.
  • Neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser technology enables stable, low-energy laser hyperthermia (laserthermia).

Observation:

  • Animal studies demonstrated minimal edema and satisfactory temperature control with laserthermia.
  • The blood-brain barrier remained open for up to 6 days post-laserthermia.
  • A Computer-controlled Laserthermia System (SLT CL50) was utilized for treatment.

Findings:

  • Five patients with brain tumors underwent laserthermia treatment.
  • CT scans showed complete tumor disappearance in 4 patients and volume reduction in 1.
  • Long-term neurological follow-up indicated no adverse effects or deterioration.

Implications:

  • Nd:YAG laser-based laserthermia presents a safe, user-friendly, and beneficial modality for deep-seated brain tumors.
  • This technique shows promise in improving therapeutic outcomes for difficult-to-treat brain malignancies.
  • Further research may establish laserthermia as a standard treatment option in neuro-oncology.
