    Summary

    Young drug abusers frequently experience flashbacks, particularly those using LSD. These flashbacks can severely impair functioning and negatively impact long-term clinical and social outcomes.

    Background:

    • Flashbacks are a recognized phenomenon in substance use disorders.
    • Previous research has explored the prevalence and impact of drug-induced flashbacks.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence and long-term effects of flashbacks in young drug abusers.
    • To assess the relationship between flashbacks and clinical/social outcomes.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective study of 91 young drug abusers admitted to a psychiatric hospital between 1971-1973.
    • Follow-up assessments conducted 1.5-4 years after initial treatment.

    Main Results:

    • 53% of young drug abusers reported experiencing flashbacks.
    • LSD users had a high incidence of flashbacks (50/65).
    • 38% of patients were severely incapacitated by flashbacks; 35 still experienced them at follow-up.

    Conclusions:

    • Flashbacks are common among young drug abusers and can persist long-term.
    • Flashbacks were associated with poorer clinical and social outcomes.
    • No link was found between flashbacks and prolonged psychotic development.
