Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Management
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Internal trading and service-level agreements (SLAs) are potential tools for managing interactions between hospital consultants and support services.
  • Past implementations of SLAs increased administrative load without altering consultant behavior or enhancing budget management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore effective strategies for managing the interface between hospital consultants and support services.
  • To identify solutions for overcoming the challenges posed by previous SLA implementations.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of previous attempts at implementing SLAs.
  • Development and implementation of simplified and improved measuring and reporting systems.
  • Facilitating dialogue between clinical managers and support services.

Main Results:

  • The study resolved issues stemming from poorly implemented SLAs.
  • Simplified measurement and reporting systems provided credible, user-friendly information.
  • Improved information facilitated meaningful debate and collaboration.

Conclusions:

  • Effective management of hospital consultant and support service interfaces requires simplified and credible information systems.
  • Successful strategies focus on facilitating communication and debate rather than solely on administrative controls like SLAs.
  • Improved reporting enhances budgetary control and operational efficiency.
