    Summary

The International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC PLUS) is feasible for coding community health issues with minor adjustments. However, classifying client activities using ICPC PLUS requires significant further development for accurate data collection.

    Area of Science:

    • Health Informatics
    • Community Health
    • Classification Systems

    Background:

    • Community health information systems are evolving, driven by a multi-state consortium.
    • Accurate data collection necessitates robust coding and classification of client issues and provider activities.
    • Existing classification systems' suitability for community health settings required evaluation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the International Classification of Primary Care (ICPC PLUS) as a tool for coding community health issues and activities.
    • Assess the feasibility of ICPC PLUS in diverse community health service settings.

    Main Methods:

    • 62 providers across 22 service groups recorded client issues and activities over two weeks.
    • Recorded data were secondarily coded using ICPC PLUS.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Subjective assessment of the fit between recorded terms and ICPC PLUS codes was performed.
  • Main Results:

    • ICPC PLUS successfully coded 90.5% of recorded client issues, with a "good fit" for 71.2%.
    • Suitable ICPC PLUS codes were found for 67.5% of activities, but only 50% were a "good fit".
    • Some ICPC PLUS terms lacked specificity, and recorded terms needed further definition.

    Conclusions:

    • ICPC PLUS is a feasible system for classifying community health issues with minor modifications.
    • Classifying community health activities with ICPC PLUS requires substantial further development and refinement.
