Immunoadsorption--a new therapeutic possibility for multiple sclerosis?

    Protein A immunoadsorption offers significant improvement for chronic progressive multiple sclerosis patients. This treatment provides stable neurological and functional gains with manageable frequency, unlike plasma exchange.

    Background:

    • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive neurological disease.
    • Conservative treatments for MS can lead to complications.
    • Plasma exchange (PLEX) was initiated due to complications from conservative MS management.

    Observation:

    • PLEX initially improved Kurtzke Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) scores in an MS patient.
    • Treatment intervals for PLEX progressively shortened over time.
    • A transition to Protein A immunoadsorption was considered due to PLEX limitations.

    Findings:

    • Protein A immunoadsorption demonstrated good and stable improvement in neurological status.
    • Functional status also showed sustained improvement with Protein A immunoadsorption.
    • The treatment frequency for Protein A immunoadsorption was acceptable at once every 3 weeks.
