Background:

Self-managed work teams (SMWTs) have demonstrated increased productivity compared to traditional hierarchical structures.
This enhanced performance is attributed to employees performing both technical and management tasks.

To identify and clarify the critical factors contributing to the success of self-managed work teams.
To provide insights for optimizing SMWT performance.

The study draws from a primary research project funded by the National Science Foundation (1994-1997).

Five key groups of factors significantly impact SMWT success: work process factors (resources, talent, procedures, effort), interpersonal process factors (communication, conflict management), environmental factors (organizational support, market conditions), team design, and team member characteristics.
