Summary

Conventional Visual Radiography (CVR), Digital Subtraction Radiography (DSR), and Probing Pocket Depth (PPD) were compared for monitoring periodontal disease and alveolar bone loss. All methods showed bone loss recovery post-treatment, with CVR and PPD noted as complementary.

Area of Science:

  • Periodontology
  • Dental Diagnostics
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Alveolar bone loss is a severe consequence of periodontal disease.
  • Radiological diagnostics are crucial for monitoring this condition.
  • Evaluating different diagnostic systems is essential for accurate assessment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of Conventional Visual Radiography (CVR).
  • To assess the complete clinical status using Digital Subtraction Radiography (DSR) and Probing Pocket Depth (PPD).
  • To compare diagnostic capabilities in monitoring experimental periodontitis and bone loss.

Main Methods:

  • Experimental periodontitis was induced in 20 beagle dogs.
  • Measurements were taken at baseline, 11 months (pre-treatment), and 12 months (post-treatment).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Conventional Visual Radiography (CVR), Digital Subtraction Radiography (DSR), and Probing Pocket Depth (PPD) were utilized.
  • Main Results:

    • All diagnostic systems indicated a significant trend of bone loss before treatment.
    • Recovery of bone to initial states was observed after medical intervention.
    • Discrepancies between systems were attributed to differing metrics and measurement errors.

    Conclusions:

    • CVR, DSR, and PPD collectively assessed the clinical status of experimental periodontitis.
    • A relationship between CVR and PPD warrants further investigation.
    • These diagnostic systems appear complementary rather than entirely compatible for monitoring alveolar bone loss.
