Background:

Physician executives in medical groups and ambulatory settings require evolving skill sets.
Future healthcare demands necessitate identification of critical competencies for these leaders.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify essential competencies for physician executives over the next five years.
To explore specific skills, knowledge, and abilities (SKA) required to achieve these competencies.

Main Methods:

Utilized the Delphi technique for data analysis.
Collected and analyzed responses from two surveys administered to members of the American College of Medical Practice Executives.

Main Results:

Identified 13 key management domains encompassing essential competencies.
"Managing healthcare resources to create quality and value" and "fundamentals of business and finance" were top-rated competencies.
The most frequently identified skill, knowledge, and ability was "the ability to build and maintain credibility and trust."

Conclusions:

Physician executives must prioritize strategic management and financial acumen.
Developing and maintaining trust is paramount for effective leadership in ambulatory care settings.
Continuous skill development in identified domains is crucial for future healthcare leadership.
