Summary

This study found that one year of tea polyphenol supplementation did not significantly improve serum pepsinogen levels in Japanese adults. Higher doses of tea polyphenols did not show a greater effect on these markers of stomach health.

Background:

  • Serum pepsinogen levels (PGI and PGII) are biomarkers for gastric mucosal atrophy, a risk factor for gastric cancer.
  • Tea polyphenols are antioxidants with potential health benefits, including effects on the gastrointestinal tract.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effect of two different doses of tea polyphenols on serum pepsinogen levels (PGI and PGII) and the PGI/PGII ratio.
  • To assess the safety and compliance of long-term tea polyphenol supplementation in individuals at risk for gastric cancer.

Main Methods:

  • A phase II study involving 184 participants (aged 40-69) with low pepsinogen levels.
  • Participants received either 100 mg (1 capsule) or 600 mg (6 capsules) of tea polyphenols daily for one year.

  • Serum pepsinogen levels were measured before and after the intervention period.
  • Main Results:

    • No significant differences in the changes of pepsinogen I or the pepsinogen I/II ratio were observed between the low-dose and high-dose tea polyphenol groups after one year.
    • Compliance with capsule intake was generally good, and no serious adverse effects related to tea polyphenols were reported.
    • In a subgroup of participants who underwent both interventions, no significant improvement in pepsinogen levels was noted with the higher dose.

    Conclusions:

    • One year of daily tea polyphenol supplementation does not appear to improve serum pepsinogen levels in Japanese individuals.
    • These findings suggest that tea polyphenols may not be effective in mitigating gastric mucosal atrophy, a precursor to stomach cancer, in this population.
    • Further research may be needed to explore other potential benefits or different dosages/forms of tea polyphenols.
