Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Parasitology
  • Pediatric Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Hydatid cysts, caused by Echinococcus granulosus, typically affect the liver and lungs.
  • Cerebral involvement is rare, with periventricular locations being exceptionally uncommon.

Observation:

  • A 5-year-old boy presented with right hemiparesis and focal seizures.
  • Neuroimaging revealed a hydatid cyst in the left periventricular region of the brain.

Findings:

  • The periventricular hydatid cyst was surgically excised.
  • Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a hydatid cyst.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the possibility of rare intracranial presentations of hydatid disease.
  • Successful surgical management can lead to favorable outcomes in pediatric patients with brain hydatid cysts.
