Summary

A rare case of intra-abdominal angiosarcomatosis developed 20 years after cervical cancer radiotherapy. This radiation-induced angiosarcoma highlights the importance of long-term surveillance for patients treated with radiation therapy.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Vascular Biology
  • Radiation Oncology

Background:

  • A 61-year-old Japanese woman with a history of cervical squamous cell carcinoma treated with radiotherapy.
  • Developed intra-abdominal angiosarcomatosis two decades post-treatment.

Observation:

  • Surgical resection of the ileum revealed diffuse proliferating angiosarcoma.
  • Tumor characterized by irregular vascular channels lined by atypical endothelial cells.

Findings:

  • Immunohistochemical analysis confirmed tumor cells positive for Factor VIII-related antigen and ulex europaeus agglutinin 1.
  • Autopsy revealed widespread dissemination to the peritoneum and invasion into the thoracic cavity.

Implications:

  • The findings strongly suggest radiation-induced angiosarcomatosis.
