Antenatal classes may not reduce psychological distress during labor, as women often struggle to implement coping strategies. More practice and better support from midwives and birth companions are needed for effective labor coping.
Area of Science:
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Psychology
- Maternal Health
Background:
- Limited evidence links antenatal classes to reduced psychological distress or improved labor satisfaction.
- Potential reasons include inadequate implementation of taught coping strategies.
Purpose of the Study:
- To explore the use of coping strategies taught in antenatal classes during labor.
- To investigate the role of practice in strategy implementation.
- To understand women's expectations of midwives and birth companions regarding coping strategy support.
Main Methods:
- A within-subjects research design was employed.
- 121 nulliparous women completed antenatal questionnaires on confidence, effort, and expectations of support.
- Post-delivery interviews and questionnaires assessed labor events, strategy use, and support involvement.
Main Results:
- Women utilized the three coping strategies (breathing, relaxation, postural change) to varying degrees.
- Midwife involvement in supporting coping strategies was less than anticipated by women.
- Birth companion involvement more closely met women's expectations than midwife involvement.
- A significant number of women were dissatisfied with the amount of practice received in antenatal classes.
Conclusions:
- Findings suggest a need to re-evaluate antenatal class content and optimal involvement of support persons.
- Further research is required to enhance women's ability to cope with labor experiences effectively.
