Summary

A woman experienced difficulty swallowing due to a pharyngeal mass. Surgical removal revealed the mass to be ectopic thyroid tissue, a rare occurrence of thyroid tissue outside its normal location.

  • Physical examination identified a mass located posterior and adjacent to the right tonsil.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision of the pharyngeal mass was performed.
  • Histopathological analysis confirmed the mass to be ectopic thyroid tissue.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of considering ectopic thyroid tissue in the differential diagnosis of pharyngeal masses presenting with dysphagia.
  • Surgical management can be curative for symptomatic ectopic thyroid tissue.
  • Further research into the embryological origins and clinical presentation of pharyngeal ectopic thyroid tissue is warranted.
