Retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenoma.

Summary

A rare retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenoma was found in a young woman. Imaging methods could not preoperatively diagnose this cystic tumor, which was confirmed by histology after surgical removal.

Background:

Retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenomas are rare neoplasms.
Accurate preoperative diagnosis can be challenging.

Observation:

A case report of a 21-year-old woman with a retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenoma.
Ultrasound, CT, and MRI detected the cystic tumor but did not establish a definitive preoperative diagnosis.

Findings:

Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of mucinous cystadenoma.
The tumor was surgically removed.

Implications:

Mullerian mesothelial metaplasia of peritoneal invagination is the likely histogenesis.
Highlights the importance of histological confirmation for rare retroperitoneal tumors.
