Area of Science:

  • Medical Microbiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Cardiology

Background:

  • Bacillus popilliae is typically an insect pathogen, rarely associated with human disease.
  • Human infections by Bacillus popilliae have not been previously documented.
  • Endocarditis and heart block are serious cardiovascular complications.

Observation:

  • A case of human infection by Bacillus popilliae is presented.
  • The infection manifested as endocarditis on a bicuspid aortic valve.
  • The patient experienced a prolonged complete heart block exceeding 30 days.

Findings:

  • Bacillus popilliae was identified as the causative agent of the endocarditis.
  • The patient's complete heart block was the longest reported in the literature.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Medical management was successful in treating the infection and its complications.
  • Implications:

    • This case expands the known pathogenic potential of Bacillus popilliae to humans.
    • Successful medical management suggests an alternative to surgery in select endocarditis cases.
    • Further research is needed to understand Bacillus popilliae's role in human infections.
