Summary

Depression does not significantly impact learning and memory deficits in non-demented Parkinson disease (PD) patients. Cognitive impairment in PD appears independent of mild to moderate depressive symptoms.

Background:

  • Learning and memory disorders are common in non-demented Parkinson disease (PD) patients.
  • Depression affects at least half of PD cases, but its contribution to cognitive deficits is unclear.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of depression on episodic memory performance in Parkinson disease (PD) patients.
  • To differentiate the cognitive effects of PD from those potentially caused by comorbid depression.

Main Methods:

  • Studied three groups: controls, non-depressed PD patients, and mildly to moderately depressed PD patients (11 subjects each).
  • Administered neuropsychological tests assessing verbal and non-verbal short-term and long-term memory.

Main Results:

  • Both PD patient groups performed significantly worse than controls on memory tests.
  • No significant differences in memory test performance were found between depressed and non-depressed PD patients.

Conclusions:

  • Mild to moderate depression does not appear to influence learning and memory deficits in non-demented Parkinson disease (PD).
  • Cognitive impairment in PD may only be affected by depression beyond a certain severity threshold.
