Preventing ophthalmia neonatorum requires mandatory prophylaxis, but no single agent fully protects against Neisseria gonorrhoea and Chlamydia trachomatis. Tetracycline ointment is an option where resistance is low, with eye prophylaxis showing a low failure rate.
