Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Biomedical Engineering

Background:

  • Cochlear ossification complicates cochlear implantation.
  • The CLARION Multi-Strategy Cochlear Implant is a potential solution.

Observation:

  • A retrospective review of 5 patients with varying degrees of cochlear ossification.
  • Surgical techniques included drill-through, scala vestibuli insertion, and complete drill-out.
  • One patient experienced delayed wound healing due to comorbidities.

Findings:

  • Successful full cochlear implant insertion in all 5 cases.
  • Mean open-set sentence recognition of 55% and word recognition of 24% in 4 patients with 3+ months experience.
  • Significant hearing benefit was achieved.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • Cochlear implantation with the CLARION device is feasible across all degrees of cochlear ossification.
  • This approach offers a viable option for hearing restoration in complex cases.
  • Further research may optimize surgical techniques for ossified cochleas.
