Summary

Submerged ("sleeping") dental implants experienced less marginal bone loss compared to non-sleeping implants over ten years. This suggests surgical trauma may cause bone loss around non-sleeping implants.

Background:

  • Dental implants have been used since 1984 to support hinging overdentures.
  • An extra submerged implant was placed as a rescue option in case of failure of the primary implants.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare marginal bone loss around submerged (sleeping) and non-sleeping dental implants used for overdenture retention.

Main Methods:

  • A longitudinal study involving 20 edentulous patients receiving 3 implants (Brånemark system) between 1984-1987.
  • Retroalveolar radiographs were taken at abutment installation and after 10 years to assess marginal bone levels.

Main Results:

  • Non-sleeping implants lost an average of 0.33 mm (right) and 0.57 mm (left) of marginal bone.
