Area of Science:

  • Endodontics
  • Biomaterials Science
  • Dental Histology

Background:

  • Root canal sealers are crucial for endodontic treatment success.
  • Evaluating sealer biocompatibility and tissue response is essential for clinical application.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the periapical tissue response to AH Plus (epoxy resin-based) and Fill Canal (zinc oxide-eugenol based) root canal sealers.

Main Methods:

  • Histological evaluation of 34 instrumented dog premolar root canals filled with gutta-percha and either AH Plus or Fill Canal.
  • Staining with hematoxylin-eosin or Mallory's trichrome.

Main Results:

  • AH Plus demonstrated no associated inflammatory cells or necrosis, with hard tissue formation observed in 14 specimens.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Fill Canal elicited a moderate inflammatory response in the periapical region, primarily adjacent to the sealer.
  • Conclusions:

    • AH Plus exhibits favorable biocompatibility and promotes hard tissue apposition.
    • Fill Canal demonstrates a moderate inflammatory potential in periapical tissues.
