Rhinoviruses, linked to asthma attacks, can replicate in the lower airways. Different rhinovirus serotypes show varying temperature preferences, with some replicating well at 37°C, challenging the notion that lower airway infection is impossible.

Background:

  • Rhinoviruses are a major cause of asthma exacerbations.
  • The ability of rhinoviruses to infect the lower airways is debated due to their optimal replication temperature of 33°C (nasal passages).
  • Previous studies used only one rhinovirus serotype, limiting generalizability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate temperature preferences for rhinovirus replication across multiple serotypes.
  • To determine if rhinoviruses can replicate effectively at lower airway temperatures (37°C).
  • To assess the potential for rhinovirus infection in the lower airways.

Main Methods:

  • Titration of eight rhinovirus serotypes (1b, 2, 7, 9, 14, 16, 41, 70) in Ohio-HeLa cells at 33°C and 37°C.
