Hepatic actinomycosis developed in a patient after intrauterine device removal, despite prior cervicitis treatment. The patient

Area of Science:

  • Medical microbiology
  • Immunology

Background:

  • Actinomycosis is a rare bacterial infection.
  • Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are associated with pelvic actinomycosis.

Observation:

  • A case of hepatic actinomycosis is presented, occurring one year post-IUD removal.
  • The patient had a history of Actinomyces cervicitis.

Findings:

  • During active hepatic actinomycosis, the patient's lymphocytes showed impaired gamma-interferon production in response to Actinomyces antigen.
  • Lymphocyte proliferation occurred, but pro-inflammatory cytokine response was deficient in this immunocompetent patient.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a potential link between IUDs, cervicitis, and disseminated actinomycosis.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Impaired cellular immunity, specifically gamma-interferon production, may play a role in the pathogenesis of severe actinomycosis.
  • Further research is needed to understand the immunologic response to Actinomyces infections.
